Microsoft Dynamics,Unified Communications, and More!

Well, now on to some discussion of the sessions I attended and some of the new Microsoft Dynamics functions, modalities and information I acquired at Convergence 2010 in Atlanta. As a strategic advisor at SetFocus and member of our leadership team there were a few tasks and goals I had set out to accomplish with my attendance at this event including meeting vendors and exploring GP and CRM in more depth for our use and reviewing the new tools for external and internal communications.

This meant I had to learn more about Dynamics SL  too, a “project based” ERP solution for midsize companies which streamlines specialized business processes. I accomplished these and much more.

As a big purveyor of social mediums and communications I was excited to see how the buzz words “unified communications”, which I first heard last year, and then again at SharePoint 2010 in San Francisco, extended themselves across Microsoft platforms and tied so nicely “together” in the today, tomorrow, TOGETHER, Microsoft mission statement that was the Convergence tag line.

Moving forward there is so much more available and accessible from a self service perspective, especially as many of the new services can be accessed online “in the cloud” not just on premise. On prem in Microsoft speak. The many new team collaboration features available let you build out a repository of individual’s information which will mean new ways to source internal talent and better ways to communicate across teams. It will also let us build out and extend our external candidate pool and allow us to provide more resources to our hiring companies and make candidates more directly accessible.

There’s wonderful new behind the scenes functionality and version control on the metadata that can be filtered and moves with the content which creates searchable content you can share and unstructured content you can find. Love this! You can also automate workflows with shared documents, and wait until you hear about what PowerPivot can do.  You can analyze with slicers, and sparklines and create dashboards and charts and graphs, in a click, and there’s autofill.  Ooh lalala. You can sign up for our FREE Excel Power Pivot Seminar being held May 14th from 1-4 p.m. EST ( http://slidesha.re/9496fp ) to learn more.

One session I attended on communications server and office communicator presented by Jennifer Kim and Sameer Athalye, with Erika Palmer, had some really informative use case scenarios and live demos using Exchange Server 2010 and OCS 2007 R2, OCS 14 coming soon. There’s voice to e-mail , text in e-mail and a mobile wipe device and OCS basically eliminates having to email conference call info. You can invite attendees through communicator and control their presence and their status. How cool is that?

There are lots of new social connectors, and jellybeans, to indicate what’s what and whose where. Communications are unified across IM, voicemail, video conferencing, telephony, web conferencing, e-mails and calendars, and audio conferencing and I can’t wait to get them up and running. Combined with Azure, Silverlight and WPF, these tools are all “it” and there’s no mistaking Microsoft is “all in” the cloud now.

I’m really into mobile platforms and the new e-commerce and advertising applications and was thrilled to see all the new formats supported here also. We’ll go into those next time.

Another awesome presentation I was at included the Support Debugging Tool presented by David Musgrave and Mariano Gomez: blog links below. I have to share this with our network guys and trainers.

David Musgrave:

http://blogs.msdn.com/developingfordynamicsgp/archive/2009/06/05/support-debugging-tool-build-11-released.aspx

Mariano Gomez:

http://dynamicsgpblogster.blogspot.com/

It has a low footprint and doesn’t write SQL features. Their recommendation was to set it up on all workstations, using a single set up with a shared location.

You won’t believe the shortcuts built into this and all the dex and ini. configuration information it supports and the security information it can provide.. role, task, identifying table, field and form with one click drill down. It runs queries directly and can export.  Excellent tool.  Thanks guys.

I also took some time out to volunteer and was honored to be able to paint the head of a seahorse for a multiple canvas painting for the Foundation for Hospital Art: http://www.hospitalart.com/

It was a great event and there is so much more still to tell. I’ll be back with more Dynamics information and will definitely look forward to attending Microsoft Dynamics Convergence again next year.

PS:  Did I tell you, that according to Kevin Schofield, GM for Strategy and Communications at Microsoft Research, Microsoft is making a NUI for me? A natural user interface so I can talk and touch instead of type!!! I’m a genius, right?  Thanks Microsoft!

Convergence 2010 vlogs…

Had to post these from my personal site- didn’t have enough video space on Radar.

Be back tomorrow with more from the Expo.

Streaming SQLSaturday!

Hey everybody… taking off tomorrow for SQLSaturday and Convergence. I have some great news about SQLSaturday.

I spoke with Stuart Ainsworth and he connected with three presenters who are going to let me test some equipment and try to set up a live stream of their presentation. Wish me luck.

The link for the live stream is:  http://media.setfocus.com/SFEvent

This is awesome news and I can’t thank them enough.  Thanks!!!

I am going to try and stream two am presentations:

Intro to DW/BI with Robert Cain which starts at 8:30 am

Introduction to Data Warehousing / BI

Business Intelligence is one of the hot job skills for 2010. In this talk you will learn the concepts behind building and designing data warehouses, and cut through the buzz words so you will walk away with a clear understanding of what words like dimensions, facts, and measures mean. You’ll also get a peak at the tools available in SQL Server 2008.

Session Level: Beginner

Robert Cain

Robert Cain is a Microsoft MVP in SQL Development, and works as a Senior Business Intelligence Architect for ComFrame. He is also a contributing author to the book “SQL Server MVP Deep Dives”. Prior to his current position, Robert spent five years working for a south eastern nuclear power company, spent 10 years as a senior consultant, and maintains the popular blog http://arcanecode.com .

and SQL Server Memory Deep Dive with Kevin Boles at 9:45 am.

SQL Server Memory Deep Dive

Like the title says, be prepared to get really down and dirty with memory allocations and usage in SQL Server. RAM is one of the three pillars of server performance and understanding how it is used, how you can analyze what is going on with it and how to properly adjust the the few knobs you have at your disposal are very important topics for both your server’s health and performance.

Session Level: Advanced

Kevin Boles

Kevin is a SQL Server expert, working exclusively with the product since version 6.5. With over fifteen years of database experience, he holds virtually every SQL Server related certification including MCT and MVP. Kevin teaches occasionally and has been a very successful independent consultant for the past ten years. He is also a Mentor with Solid Quality Mentors, a top-tier global SQL Server consulting firm. His passion is the relational engine, especially performance analysis and tuning.

Louis Davidson is going to be presenting Design patterns at 2:45 pm which I may try to stream also.

Database Design Patterns

Beyond database design fundamentals (for example, Normalization) lies the area where you have to create “real” solutions. In this session, I will cover a good number of patterns that we commonly find useful to try to apply to the problem of building a database solution. Ideas like generalization, subclassing, single table domain tables, optional data, and more will be discussed, some of them good, some not so good (don’t assume which will be which), but all that are common and/or useful for your database implementations.

Session Level: Intermediate

Louis Davidson

I have been in the IT industry for 16 years as a corporate database developer and architect. I have been a Microsoft MVP for 5 years and have written 4 books on database design. Currently I am a Senior Data Architect for Compass Technology Management, supporting the Christian Broadcasting Network and NorthStar Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. I have a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in computer science with a minor in mathematics.

I’ll try and follow up and get you websites, pics and materials for these presenters as I can.

You can follow them at the event on twitter: use Hashtag #sqlsat41  and me using hashtag #setfocusradar

See you Saturday!

IAMCP, SQLSaturday & Dynamics Convergence

Hey, hey, it’s Tuesday!  Happy Tuesday.

Did you know Tuesday is named after the god of Tyr and Tuesday is the usual day for elections in the United States… now you do so please go vote today if you have elections near you. Thanks!

You can vote for me too-haha- by connecting  with me on:

foursquare-SFRadar and following  me on directly on Twitter TBilly or SetFocus Radar

I’ll be using these apps to send updates  from all of the events we host and that I attend, starting with Thursday’s “Center of the Universe” IAMCP meeting at Microsoft offices in NYC.

If you’re a Microsoft partner you really should join your local IAMCP chapter if you haven’t already:

https://iamcp.site-ym.com/  They have lots of great events, monthly meetings and are an endless supply of resources and support for you and your business.

Whooh, whooo… now on to Convergence. That’s right, that’s where I’m headed this weekend and I am so excited.

http://www.microsoft.com/dynamics/convergence/atlanta10/default.aspx

Kicking off an Open session Sunday are Dan Fennell and Fred Studer. Their session is titled “The Dynamics Duo” and it’s going to cover the awesome new one, two punch that Microsoft Office 2010 & Microsoft Dynamics deliver.

You’re guaranteed to the leave the session with new, supercharged powers that include knowledge on how to take advantage of cloud services and the “super” features these technologies bring  to life.

Kapow! Ka blaam! Dynamics I am.

I had the pleasure of meeting Fred Studer and hearing him speak at a Microsoft/Forbes.com event in NY a few years back with Steve Forbes and he was very engaging and informative so I’m thinking this session should be good.

I go for technology and I get some football- how awesome is that. New Orleans Saints head coach, Sean Payton will be hosting a session sure to inspire as he talks about the Saints come back from the struggles and defeat of Hurricane Katrina to becoming the first championship team in the history of their franchise to win a Superbowl: XLIV Superbowl.

I’m also going to be attending sessions on Microsoft Dynamics Strategy & CRM Technology Trends, Payment & Commerce Services for Microsoft Dynamics ERP, Microsoft Excel 2010 & Excel Web Applications, Pivot Tables, Collaboration, Communities and Social Networking, and The Business Value of Online Services.

My schedule is built and my calendar is full.  Lots to learn here so I’ll keep you posted as I go.

The Saturday before Convergence I’ll be out in Alpharetta at SQLSaturday #41 which is officially sold out: http://sqlsaturday.com/41/eventhome.aspx

This is another  jammed packed event that will be lots of fun for everyone with training and demos- MDX, architecture, cubes, TSQL, data mining, you name it! It’s SQL, it’s there.

You can follow SQLSaturday on twitter: use Hashtag #sqlsat41  and me using hashtag #setfocusradar

I am going to try and stream and connect via video while I’m the road too so I’ll update you on that as I get more details.

Tweet you real soon.

On my Radar: SQL Server Fast Track

Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft BI (Business Intelligence) and Microsoft Announces:

SQL Server Fast Track Data Warehouse.

Is this the third musketeer? It’s here, not right around the bend, and we need to ask:

“Is it the next main enterprise technology you need to get up to speed on?”

Think so.  I’ll have to start asking some probing questions and I’ll ask around at SQLSaturday next week too and extend this forum to you, but I believe this is taking off, and there are currently very few people with depth of knowledge or experience with this, which leaves lots of room for training and becoming a leader and expert.

Let’s explore and highlight some key points and then you can weigh in and let me know what you think.

A Better Approach to Data Warehousing

“Fast Track Data Warehouse solutions are designed with a rigorous approach to data warehousing. Using best practices on Windows configuration and SQL Server database management they help customers to build Data Warehouses that offer predictable performance.”

Well, let me know what you thinkJ

Microsoft Convergence & SQLSaturday

Last week I talked about Earth Day (April 22, 2010) http://www.earthday.org/  and National Volunteer Week (April 18-24) http://www.handsonnetwork.org/events/nvw2010 and how they overlap and I mentioned how important I believe volunteering is and how beneficial it is for the volunteers as well as the recipients. I think volunteering is a lifestyle choice, one I’m glad to partake of.

Well, I am going to be attending the Microsoft Dynamics Convergence event in Atlanta:

Convergence 2010 Atlanta
April 24-27, 2010
Georgia World Congress Center
Atlanta, GA

Event Website: www.microsoft.com/dynamics/convergence

and was looking forward to volunteering there.

That week and prior to the start of that event, Convergence attendees are able to sign up for volunteer activities being held at the Atlanta Youth Project Summer Camp.

_clearFlag=course&ixAffiliateRegion=&sZipcode=&bAvailable=&dtBegin=&dtEnd=

“Convergence volunteers will expand the camping opportunity for hundreds of boys and girls by building additional cabins for overnight campers; we’ll also be constructing buildings, an outdoor kitchen, a bathroom facility and fencing, plus we’ll also do some landscaping in a new pool area currently under construction!

Other volunteers will assist in putting up a retaining wall for the camp beach area – all designed to enhance the camp experience and grow the number of children who can utilize the campgrounds year round.”

How cool is that? Everyone gets to meet and get together and spend the day working in the sun making a camp a better place for kids to stay and play. The perfect way to spend a Saturday!

I’m going to have to schedule my Convergence volunteering activities for next year though as now I will be at another volunteer event- this one’s for adult SQL people:

SQLSaturday #41 http://www.sqlsaturday.com/41/eventhome.aspx

so if you’re a SQL professional or interested in learning about SQL come meet me there,

and if you’re interested in finding out about Microsoft Dynamics itself, there are some great groups:
