Everyone is through the first week and moving on to the second! Most have figured out the basic navigation like the GRID (and the importance of the mute button), their virtual machines and some of the small features like Office Communicator. The classroom bond with fellow classmates is beginning to form and everyone is starting to settle into stride. The focus of the .NET Curriculum this week revolves around Framework 3.5 new features and an intro to XML. Wayne Wilkerson will again be leading the lecture with the same interactive format as provided last week.
On the Career Development (CD) front, everyone has attended the CD orientation brown bag session and are now equipped with knowledge, tools and resources. Everyone knows their point person, the “big picture” of the CD/Placement Team, videos and documents available, workshop schedules, and the roadmap for guidance. We discussed ideal timelines for optimal results and everyone was invited to join Yammer utilizing the setfocus.com email address. Further discussions about Microsoft Certification, varying experience backgrounds and how we address the different career goals of each student took us to the end of the hour.
Students First Career Development Assignments:
- Identify who you are as “the product”, what do you have to offer prospective employers?
- Begin researching your personal “ideal position”
- Begin constructing your resume utilizing the SetFocus resume template
Next week we will continue to the journey into week three. Lots of fun and exciting career “development” ahead!
