Article Alley – Phone Interviews

In her article “Phone Preparation Can Be Key in Landing Interviews,” Sheryl Silver highlights the purpose of the phone screen and how to prepare for it.

Silver likens the phone screen to a first round face – to – face interview, letting the reader know that they should prepare by rehearsing answers to commonly asked questions. She goes on to say that taking time to prepare and practice these answers will enable you to “hone your [responses] and include what employers calling might deem the most impressive aspects of your experience.”

Here at SetFocus we suggest going one step further by using….the STAR Method!

The STAR Method is a structured manner of responding to behavioral – based interview questions by discussing the specifics of a given event or project. Outlining the details of the Situation, Task, Action, and Result enable you to highlight experiences and accomplishments, as well as traits and skills that are of value.

While preparing STARs and rehearsing interview question responses will give you the edge you need to impress on that all important phone screen, it will also reduce your stress level and increase your confidence when speaking to employers whether it be over the phone or when you land that face – to – face interview!

How are you preparing for that first interview?  Share your experiences with us.

Networking resource: Google Buzz

A new free networking tool, Google Buzz, breaks Twitter’s 140-character barrier and lets you easily include photos and YouTube videos.

If you have a Google email account @gmail.com, Google Buzz is already accessible to you.  If you don’t, you may want to set up the free account, just to take advantage of all that Buzz offers.  Buzz is part of Gmail. Your Gmail id and password now accesses both tools.

Is your phone smart, like an Android 2.0, iPhone, Nokia S60 or a Windows Mobile phone?  Once you set up your Gmail/Buzz account, point your phone’s web browser to buzz.google.com.  You will be asked if Buzz can reference your current location.  If you agree, you will soon learn all that is “buzzing” around you.  Yesterday, I learned that a new Asian restaurant had opened just a few blocks away, and the Pad Thai was excellent!

Buzz integrates with Google Maps for smart phone, so you can navigate anywhere on the map and see where recent messages have been posted.  What have people been buzzing about at Walt Disney World? – Navigate there and find out.  Want to learn the buzz about a potential employer? – let Buzz Maps take you there.

With or without a smart phone, Google Buzz offers a flexible way to share your current status, to hold live discussions of any length, and to reach out to a network that already exceeds 25% of Twitter’s amazing volume.

Gmail users can build from the existing email contacts.  Other users can import from dozens of sources and Google offers 30-days of email forwarding to those who choose to switch email providers.  Each Buzz user can choose whether to keep another email provider or migrate to Gmail.   Be sure to read the screen instructions carefully to make the choice you want.

Have you tried it?  Please share your thoughts and how you’ve made Google Buzz work best for you.

Preparing for the First Week of the Masters Program

Do you remember the night before your first day of high school; or maybe the night before your first day of a new job? You are excited, slightly nervous and if you are anything like me – playing out in your mind how the day will go. Who will you meet? What will you do? What is this new experience going to be like? In light of these questions and the possibility that others too may be asking these same things as their big start day approaches, I thought it would be fun to follow one of our classes as they move through our Masters Program from the SetFocus Career Development perspective. The class I chose is a full time .NET Masters Program and they will start next Monday.

The Week before Class

Here is what Students are receiving this week:

  • Polycom units for GRID access and first books
  • Phone calls from their Career Development Representative to introduce and welcome them as well as address any questions
  • An email from their Career Development Representative containing 2 important documents; a Career Development Agreement that discusses what we expect from our Students and in turn what they can expect from us and a New Student Survey that allows the Career Development and Placement team to gain a better understanding of where each individual is looking to take their newly acquired skills
  • An invitation to attend Orientation the Friday before class start; this orientation is provided by the Dean of Students and is an introduction to the GRID and classroom tools and resources
  • Virtual Machine access details arrive via email the Friday before class starts

As you can see the pre-week is busy with equipment setup and introductions. The more the student can do this week to ensure their home space is setup and conducive to the many learning hours they are about to embark upon the better for them. We, your Career Development team also want to meet and connect as we are about to step into a new partnership together!

Next week – the first week of class!

Please feel free to ask questions or comment on our experiences as we go along.  I would love to hear from you!

Networking Resource: youare.com

As technical people, we often turn to the internet for answers.  Sometimes, the answers require very little digging.

Take the question, “What is the best way to find a job?”

If you Google that, you will find answerbag.com, chiff.com and squidoo.com at or near the top of natural search responses.  Their unanimous answer: networking.

Currently, several dozen websites offer free services to help you network.  How many of them are you using?  How many of them would you like to use?

Within the Career Development Dish, this series of blog posts will consider networking resources one at a time.  We will begin at youare.com.  “You are” describes itself as a microblogging site.  You create posts of up to 140 characters, but also can include video and images.

If you decide to sign up… after reading their Terms of Use and Privacy Policy… be prepared to answer a simple math question on the sign-up form.  That’s their way of avoiding “robo-signups”.

YouAre asks for a lot of information… you can put in your curriculum vitae – as they call it.  Also, you can upload a photo, publish videos and more.  Like many sites, they offer ways to help you invite friends and extend your network even further.

If you’re familiar with Twitter and LinkedIn, YouAre may look like a blend of the two.  The interface looks good, so if you have a message to share even more places on the web, this might be a cool tool for you.

Have you used YouAre?  Let us hear your thoughts and comments.

A thought for your day…

Every day that you go without finding a job…and you start doubting yourself…remember…

A thought for your day…

This morning I started my day knowing that today is the day we begin to blog…blog about things “Career Development”…so where to begin?

I am a strong believer in starting your day with a thought that you can refer to throughout the rest of the day.  You know…something that can motivate, inspire, or just maybe reflect upon…something that you can (if you choose) carry with you for a life time.

So today, I’m starting with a quote written by Bob Moawad who was a great educator with focus on self esteem…it’s up to you:

“The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours – it is an amazing journey – and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.”

Think about it.  Make this a great day!
