When preparing for your interviews, determining what you should wear is always a hot topic! “Do I have to wear a suit?” “Should I wear a skirt and stockings?” “Can I let my personality come through in my clothing choices?”
Here are some Do’s and Don’ts to help you feel more comfortable and confident when dressing for your interviews.
Do: Play It Safe! – You will want to dress as professionally as possible for your first round interview. Wearing a suit and tie or a business dress with pantyhose and conservative heels are great ideas when putting together your professional wardrobe. Remember, it’s best to be dressed better than those around you! Think of it this way…you are a “guest” in their “house” and you need to represent your best. Don’t forget to polish your shoes!
Don’t: Dress for the everyday. Jeans, sneakers, flip flops, hats, and t-shirts are everyday casual clothing choices and should not be worn to interviews. These convey a very relaxed, laissez – faire attitude that will show a less than serious side to you. Also stay away from cologne and perfume (you never know who’s allergic) and too much jewelry…nothing too flashy!
Do: Follow dress code instructions given to you by the company or interviewer ahead of time. Often companies will provide you with instructions on what you should wear to your interview. You should listen and dress accordingly. For example; if you are directed to dress in business casual attire, pressed slacks with a dress shirt or a conservative skirt and blouse are great! Clean, polished business shoes are still important with business casual. Dressing to the company’s specifications will show that you can follow instructions, are a good listener, and your extra care on shoes show attention to detail.
Don’t….forget the little things! Take a shower, brush your teeth, comb your hair, and put on deodorant. Women, be sure your handbag is conservative and matches your shoes and attire. It’s usually these routine things that we forget when we’re nervous and anxious.
Do: Update your wardrobe – you will want to make sure that business clothes and accessories are in line with times, up to date, and fit well. Investing in a new suit or business dress that is in style never hurts! Have you checked to see if that suit in your closet is out dated? Do you have nice shoes? How about your belt? Handbag? If not, it’s time to shop!
If you are ever in doubt about what to wear to your job interviews….play it safe and be conservative!
