In her article “Phone Preparation Can Be Key in Landing Interviews,” Sheryl Silver highlights the purpose of the phone screen and how to prepare for it.
Silver likens the phone screen to a first round face – to – face interview, letting the reader know that they should prepare by rehearsing answers to commonly asked questions. She goes on to say that taking time to prepare and practice these answers will enable you to “hone your [responses] and include what employers calling might deem the most impressive aspects of your experience.”
Here at SetFocus we suggest going one step further by using….the STAR Method!
The STAR Method is a structured manner of responding to behavioral – based interview questions by discussing the specifics of a given event or project. Outlining the details of the Situation, Task, Action, and Result enable you to highlight experiences and accomplishments, as well as traits and skills that are of value.
While preparing STARs and rehearsing interview question responses will give you the edge you need to impress on that all important phone screen, it will also reduce your stress level and increase your confidence when speaking to employers whether it be over the phone or when you land that face – to – face interview!
